Parliament Adopts Russian Law in Third Reading with 84 Votes | List of Supporters

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

The Georgian Parliament adopted the Russian Law on so-called Foreign Agents at today's plenary session in the third and final reading. Eighty-four deputies supported it, while thirty were against it. In addition to Georgian Dream and People's Power, two members of the European Socialists also voted in favour of the law.

The plenary session lasted about four hours, during which members of the parliamentary majority repeatedly confronted opposition MPs. At the same time, citizens held a demonstration against the Russian Law near the parliament building.

Representatives of the opposition are calling the adoption of the Russian Law a betrayal of the state and a constitutional coup. According to their assessment, all 84 MPs pose a threat to visa-free travel to the EU and the country's European integration process. They are calling on citizens to protest.

"For the third time, they supported the law that removes the sovereignty of this country in favor of the Kremlin, threatens the territorial integrity even more, completes our membership in the European Union and NATO, and turns our democracy into authoritarianism. This is the task that Ivanishvili assigned to all MPs. Of course, we will continue to oppose not only the Russian law but also the Russian government. The president's veto is ahead, and October is ahead," MP Teona Akubardia said.

The Russian Law will be sent to President Salome Zourabichvili for signature. She intends to use the veto.

On April 3, 2024, Georgian Dream once again initiated the Russian Law on so-called Foreign Agents in the parliament. This law had been withdrawn a year ago as a result of thousands of protests, and the party had promised to never accept it again. The Russian Law requires independent media and non-governmental organizations that operate with grant support from international funds and cannot be controlled by the government or related groups to register as foreign agents.

The Parliament adopted the Russian Law in the first and second readings on April 17 and May 1.
