Ambassador of the European Union Pavel Herchinski called the initiation of the impeachment procedure of the President by Georgian Dream untimely and unhelpful. According to the ambassador, unfortunately, this weakens the state institutions of Georgia, and moreover, it is happening exactly when the European Commission is about to publish the first report on enlargement.

‘’We will see how it goes. But it is clear that this process is untimely and detrimental to depolarization, which is the number one priority. This was made clear by the top representative Vice President Josep Borrell during his Tbilisi visit a few weeks ago.
Now the case is up to the Constitutional Court of Georgia. I cannot tell you much about this. We are waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court. It is up to the courts to decide whether the president violated the Constitution or not. If you ask me whether this helps depolarization, clearly not,’’ said the ambassador.
He added that there is a mixed picture in Georgia regarding the implementation of the 12 recommendations of the European Commission.
‘’I have been here for more than a year. I carefully follow what different politicians say. Some of them claim that Georgia practically fulfilled everything, while others claim that Georgia virtually did not fulfill any of the recommendations.
If you want my opinion, I think the picture is mixed. On the one hand, a lot has been done, especially in recent weeks, following the visit of the EU High Representative, we see acceleration progress, on the other hand, there are still mixed signals coming from Georgia.
Non-governmental organizations and civil society are still under pressure. The decision must be made by the leaders of the 27 member states. We sincerely hope that the message that the Prime Minister received yesterday from the European leaders in Spain is sincere and we will all celebrate in December,’’ said the Ambassador.
The Constitutional Court completed the consideration of the case on October 5 and, by constitution, it has a one-month deadline to prepare its ruling. If the Constitutional Court determines that Salome Zourabichvili did violate the Constitution, 100 deputies' votes are needed to remove the President, which Georgian Dream comes short of. The opposition does not support the impeachment of the president.
