Marco Rubio, 53, was elected to the Senate in 2010. He is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Intelligence Committee and a senior member of the Foreign Relations Committee. Rubio is considered a "hawk" in foreign policy, advocating for tough positions, particularly toward China, Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba.
According to Reuters, "The Ukraine crisis will be high on Rubio's agenda." In recent interviews, he stated that Ukraine should focus more on negotiating with Russia than on reclaiming territories seized by Russia in the past decade.
However, Rubio was one of 15 Republican senators who voted against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine in April. The package passed with support from 46 Democrats, 31 Republicans, and 2 independent senators.
Western media reports suggest that Rubio has softened his stance while engaging with Trump. "I'm not on Russia's side — but unfortunately the reality of it is that the way the war in Ukraine is going to end is with a negotiated settlement," Rubio told NBC in September.
If the media reports are confirmed, Rubio would become the first Latin American to hold the position of U.S. Secretary of State.
Donald Trump and his administration are set to begin work in January after the inauguration.
