In an interview with The Insider published on July 21, Mamuka Mamulashvili addressed the summoning of citizens fighting on Ukraine's side to the State Security Service of Georgia.
"I predicted such a development of events after Russia began announcing the search for us. This was done so that the Georgian authorities would have a reason to arrest us. Russian and Georgian special services are working synchronously today.
Many of our boys who returned to Georgia were advised to leave by the Georgian special services, who said: 'There are many Russians here; we can't protect you anymore, please leave.' I do not rule out that some of the volunteers may be handed over to Russia, but only after the autumn elections. I have already shared information about the threats to Georgian fighters with the United States. I am confident that sanctions will be imposed against the Georgian government. We will work step by step to facilitate sanctions against all those involved," said Mamulashvili. A month ago, Russia declared the Georgian Legion, which he founded, as a "terrorist organization."
In recent days, the State Security Service has been summoning Georgians who are fighting in Ukraine and are currently in Georgia for questioning. Among them are Gela Kakhabrishvili, Vazha Tsetsadze, Nadim Khmaladze, Lasha Chigladze, Lasha Rukhaia, and Konstantine Jghamaia.
Gela Kakhabrishvili, a veteran of the Abkhazia and August 2008 wars, and his lawyer, Mikheil Ramishvili, announced on July 23 that, after completing the questioning in the presence of a magistrate judge at the Tbilisi City Court, the SSS investigator inquired about the preparation of a terrorist act against Bidzina Ivanishvili and high-ranking officials of Georgian Dream. On July 24, the SSS confirmed the information previously reported by pro-government media, stating that it is investigating "facts of preparation for the murder of Bidzina Ivanishvili."
"The State Security Service is investigating the preparation of the murder of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of the Georgian Dream party, which is allegedly organized and financed by former high-ranking officials of the Georgian government and former law enforcement officers in Ukraine. The aim of these criminal actions is to violently overthrow the state government by destructive forces, creating disorder and weakening the government," the SSS stated, although they did not specify when or on what basis the investigation began.
The case is initiated under the first parts of Articles 18-323 and 315 of the Criminal Code, which involve the preparation of a terrorist act and conspiracy to overthrow the state government.
