The employees of the General Inspection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrested Ioseb Gelashvili, the head of the Agara station of the Shida Kartli police department. He is charged with the illegal purchase and storage of firearms and the storage and transportation of a particularly large quantity of bootleg cigarettes.

According to the Ministry, as a result of the search of the detainee’s car, house and office, large amounts of bootleg cigarettes, firearms, ammunition, and cash were recovered as evidence.
According to media reports, the police chief was smuggling bootleg cigarettes from the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali and selling them in local shops.
Agara is a village in the Kareli municipality and is close to the villages of the occupied Tskhinvali region.
The investigation is carried out under Clause 3 of Article 200, and Clause 3 of Article 236. The offense is punishable by up to 8 years of imprisonment.
