The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), composed of members from the national parliaments of 46 countries, has elected the former President of Switzerland, Alain Berset, as its new Secretary General. He will succeed Maria Pejcinović Burić in this position.

Other candidates included Indrek Saar from Estonia and Didier Reynders from Belgium. In the second round of voting, Alain Berset won the majority with 114 votes. Indrek Saar and Didier Reynders received 85 and 46 votes, respectively.
Alain Berset will begin his five-year term of office on September 18, 2024.
Berset is a member of the Social Democratic Party. From 2012 to 2023, he was a member of the Swiss government. During this period, he served as President of the Confederation twice, in 2018 and 2023.
