In a statement issued after the incident, Trump reported that the bullet had grazed the upper part of his right ear. He has since been discharged from the hospital.
The US Secret Service, responsible for the security of current and former presidents, stated that the attacker fired multiple shots at the stage from an elevated position and was neutralized by Secret Service personnel. One attendee at the meeting was killed, and two others were seriously injured.
According to the FBI, the attacker has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, and the incident has been classified as attempted murder.
"This evening, there was what we call an assassination attempt against our former president, Donald Trump," an FBI spokesman said at a press conference, emphasizing ongoing investigative efforts.
US President Joe Biden condemned the violence against his election rival and expressed his support for Trump: "There is no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as a nation and condemn it," Biden stated.
Despite the incident, the Republican National Committee has not canceled the national convention scheduled for July 15-18, during which Donald Trump will be officially nominated as the party's presidential candidate. Trump himself plans to participate.
Georgian authorities responded to the attack on Donald Trump. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated, "The global war party is behind this incident. In the 21st century, liberal fascism, radicalism, polarization, hatred, and bloody attacks on politicians have unfortunately become commonplace in America and Europe. I express my solidarity and wish Donald Trump good health," Kobakhidze wrote on social media.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, leader of the parliamentary majority, described the attack on the presidential candidate in the leading democracy as shocking, disturbing, and alarming. He wished for Trump's speedy recovery and return to the electoral campaign.
"Political violence, assassination attempts, subversive actions, propaganda, war, and destruction are hallmarks of the Global War Party and liberal fascism. In Georgia, agency parties maintain there is no Global War Party; it's an invention of the Georgian Dream…” Mdinaradze added in a Facebook post.
President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili emphasized that there is no place for political violence in democracy. She wished Trump and all the injured a full recovery and extended condolences to the family of the deceased meeting participant.
