Kordzaia Urges Public Defender to Demand Suspension of Russian Law Adoption

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

Georgian Parliament Independent Member, Tamar Kordzaia, has called upon the Public Defender, Levan Yoselian, to step forward and demand that the ruling Georgian Dream suspend the adoption of the Russian Law.

Kordzaia asserts that the Russian Law, as directly stated in the report on the law on so-called Foreign Agents prepared by the OSCE/ODIHR at the request of the Public Defender, will destroy human rights.

"I therefore call on him to step forward and protect human rights as a preventive measure. This is his direct function, and he must fulfill it. Otherwise, the whole world will know that Georgia has a public defender who does not protect and stand guard over human rights. This is the policy of the Georgian government that undermines human rights. For this reason, public defenders exist in countries: to oppose the implementation of such policies. I voted for him as a public defender, and I voted for him to protect human rights in this country. I request him to step forward now and demand that 'Georgian Dream' halt the consideration and adoption of this draft law," said Kordzaia.

Tamar Kordzaia is one of the eleven opposition MPs who were not given the opportunity to ask questions and were kicked out of the session of the Legal Affairs Committee today during the second reading of the Russian Law.

On April 3, 2024, Georgian Dream once again initiated in the parliament the Russian Law on so-called Foreign Agents, which was withdrawn a year ago as a result of thousands of protests, and promised never to accept it again. The Russian Law requires independent media and non-governmental organizations that operate with grant support from international organizations and cannot be controlled by the government or related groups to register as Foreign Agents. On April 17, 83 members of the Parliament supported the Russian Law in the first reading.

Protests against the Russian Law have been taking place near the parliament since April 15. In contrast, Georgian Dream is holding a "public gathering" today, on April 29, in support of the Russian Law. The event, organized by the ruling party, requires the participation of public service employees and is scheduled to start at 20:00 in front of the parliament building.
