Michael Roth: Kesaria Abramidze Killed Day After Anti-LGBTQ Law Passage

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, Michael Roth, responded to the murder of transgender woman Kesaria Abramidze in Tbilisi. He wrote on social network X that the crime occurred just one day after the Georgian Parliament passed a homophobic law.

“Those who sow hatred will reap violence. Kesaria Abramidze was killed. Just one day after the Georgian parliament passed the anti-LGBTI law. I am deeply shocked and call on the ruling party “Georgian Nightmare” to immediately withdraw the shameful law,” wrote the German MP.

Michael Roth criticized Georgia's ruling party for adopting the legislative package On Family Values and The Protection of Minors. According to him, the Russification of Georgia is advancing, and sexual minorities are being stigmatized and criminalized. "The Georgian regime seeks to destroy the country's proud tradition of tolerance, openness, and its path towards the EU," he wrote.

On September 17, with the support of 84 members of Parliament, the highest representative of the European Union for foreign and security policy called for the withdrawal of the legislative amendments. According to Josep Borrell, the legislative package would undermine fundamental human rights, increase discrimination, and exacerbate stigmatization.

The Georgian government does not share this criticism. On September 18, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated: "First, we passed the law on transparency. Transparency is one of the core European principles, yet this law was declared to be a Russian law completely out of nowhere. Now, we have passed a second law that regulates the simplest things: a man should be a man, a woman should be a woman, a man should be called a man, and a woman should be called a woman. And again, this has been labeled a Russian law. This is yet another completely incomprehensible reaction. In the perception of Georgian society, Europe cannot be associated with opacity and LGBT propaganda - that is wrong. Of course, this will not suit the image of the European Union in the eyes of Georgian society."
