Before the 2024 parliamentary elections, the delegation members will assess the overall political environment and factors that may influence the pre-election processes.
“The delegation will review important topics such as election administration, citizen engagement, gender and inclusion issues, political parties, and the campaign process. These meetings constitute the first phase of NDI's pre-election observation process. This process also includes a second pre-election delegation, a group of long-term observers, and an election day observation delegation,” explains the NDI-Georgia office.
The meetings will be led by Ann Linde, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden; Per Eklund, former head of the EU Delegation to Georgia; Michael Posner, former Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the Department of State; Daniel Gottfried, legislative and policy analyst in the office of the chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee; Eva Busza, NDI Eurasia Regional Director; and Richard Klein, NDI Global Director of Election Programs. Alan Gillam, director of the NDI-Georgia office, will also attend the meetings.
After the meetings, the NDI delegation will publish the main conclusions of the pre-election environment assessment in the form of a report.
According to NDI, the pre-election observation mission aims to support the democratic development of Georgia and the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the Georgian population by offering constructive recommendations. Simultaneously, it reflects the international community's expectation that all parties involved in the election process will adhere to the principles of democratic elections and political processes.
The program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of the Consortium for the Enhancement of Elections and Political Processes (CEPPS).
