According to the contract signed with the Association of Airports of Georgia on February 16, the winning company must prepare a project for the construction of a new airport terminal within 3 months at the latest. The value of the contract is 349 280 GEL.
According to the technical task, the terminal building should functionally consist of the following spaces: waiting hall, check-in area, boarding and departure halls, baggage issue and reception areas, security control area, customs and border inspection area, high-class service (VIP) independent area, and office spaces. Food and shopping facilities should be located in the waiting hall of the terminal.
The estimated total area of the terminal should be 1500-2000 square meters and should be designed to serve a total of 150 passengers per hour. The winning company must also design the area surrounding the terminal (approximately 10,000 square meters), where a parking lot for 60 cars will be located.
According to the concept presented in the competition by Khmaladze Architects LLC, the area of the terminal is 1770 square meters, and the height is 7 meters. In the direction of the northern facade of the building, there is an open view of the Caucasus Range.
"We plan to connect Telavi's new domestic airport with all international and domestic airports in our country to stimulate the growth of tourist flows and mobility. The new terminal will have a capacity of more than 200,000 passengers. We will also build a new runway," said Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili.
It is not yet known when exactly the construction of Telavi airport will start and end.
The construction of a new airport in Telavi was announced by the then Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in September 2023. According to him, the airport should receive its first passengers in May - June 2024. The estimated cost of the project is 25-30 million GEL.
In 2018, the then Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili also spoke about the need for an airport in Kakheti.
Currently, 5 airports are operating in Georgia: Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi international airports, as well as Mestia and Ambrolauri airports.
