Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee Holds Session on Public Holiday, May 10

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Anri Okhanashvili, the Legal Affairs Committee Chairman

On Friday, May 10, which has been declared a public holiday by the government, Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee session will convene. The opposition is concerned that the ruling Georgian Dream may introduce the Russian Law for consideration in the third reading, even though it is not yet among the three issues listed on the published agenda.

"The Russian law is not on the agenda yet, but the issue can be added at the session itself, and the Dream is divided in votes. It is possible that it will be accepted on Friday in the third reading at the committee. After that, there remains the plenary session (next week), the veto, and its overcoming - first at the committee, then at the plenary," says oppositional Lelo member and MP Ana Natsvlishvili.

The committee chairman, Anri Okhanashvili, stated that the discussion of the Russian Law is scheduled for Monday, May 13. "During Holy Week, let's at least avoid spreading lies," he wrote on social media

Based on Article 34 of the Parliament's Regulations, the agenda of the committee session is determined by the committee chairman on his own initiative or at the request of the member/members of the committee. The committee chairman is obliged, at the request of the majority of the committee's members, to include the issue in the agenda of the committee's session. At the committee meeting, it is not allowed to introduce a new issue into the agenda of the session, except for the issues stipulated by the constitution and in cases of the accelerated consideration of the draft law.

The government has announced the following days of Easter - May 7, 8, and 10 - as holidays. May 9, the day of victory over fascism, is already a holiday according to the Labor Code. The opposition believes that the introduction of "May holidays" is aimed at weakening the protest against the Russian Law.

On May 11, a large-scale demonstration is planned in Tbilisi against the adoption of the repressive law.
