The Prosecutor's Office determined that on July 19, at around 04:35, Revi Demetrashvili was traveling at excessive speed on his motorcycle. Employees of the Patrol Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs asked him to stop, but he did not comply and continued driving in the direction of Aleksandre Kazbegi Avenue. At that time, he collided with a car driven by a Patrol Police Department employee, who was moving in violation of traffic rules. The motorcycle driver died on the spot. "The investigation of the criminal case related to the possible crime committed by the patrol police officers is ongoing," the Prosecutor's Office said.
Information about the participation of the Patrol Police crew in the traffic accident was initially spread by the Formula and Mtavari Arkhi TV stations. They obtained video footage taken by an eyewitness, allegedly showing a police vehicle damaged in the collision. Giorgi Modebadze, the citizen who took the footage, was arrested administratively by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He is accused of verbally abusing police officers.
It was reported that the patrol crew, during the pursuit, blocked the motorcycle driver's path with their car.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs did not issue a statement regarding the incident. The Prosecutor's Office started an investigation under Article 276, Part 6 of the Criminal Code.
