“The Russian government is going to tell its own story. Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny's death,” Biden was quoted as saying by the media.
“What happened to Navalny is another confirmation of Putin's brutality. Putin targets not only citizens of foreign countries - we see what is happening now in Ukraine - he commits terrible crimes against his people.”
According to Joe Biden, he is outraged by the news of Alexei Navalny's death. The US president said that Navalny “bravely stood up to corruption, violence, and everything bad that Putin's government was doing. In response, Putin poisoned him, imprisoned him, and tried him for fabricated crimes.”
According to Biden, Alexei Navalny remained a strong voice of truth even while in prison.
“People in Russia and around the world are mourning Navalny today because he embodied many qualities that Putin does not. He was brave and principled. He sought to build a Russia governed by the rule of law. He believed in such a Russia and considered it a cause worth fighting for, and apparently, even dying for. Despite being poisoned and nearly killed in 2020, he could have lived safely in exile. Instead, he chose to return to Russia, fully aware that he would likely be arrested. He could have faced further attempts on his life if he had continued his work, but he persisted because of his deep belief in Russia, his country,” Joe Biden said.
Asked by a reporter if there was an assassination, President Biden said, “We don't know exactly what happened, but there is no doubt that Navalny's death was the result of something that Putin and his thugs did.”
According to Joe Biden, this news should prompt the United States to allocate funding to Ukraine so that it can continue to protect itself from Russia.
On February 16, it became known that the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny died in prison after three years of imprisonment. The Federal Penitentiary Service in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District stated that in Correctional Colony No. 3, after a walk, a prisoner fell ill and lost consciousness almost immediately. “All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, but they did not yield positive results. Emergency doctors confirmed the convict's death. The causes of death are being determined,” the agency stated. The source of the propaganda channel Russia Today identified a blood clot as the cause of Navalny's death.
Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Since the end of 2023, he had been serving his sentence in the special-regime colony “Polar Wolf”. The colony in question is located in the Kharp settlement, on the Yamal Peninsula, in Siberia. On February 14, the politician's press secretary, Kira Yarmish, announced that Navalny had been placed in solitary confinement for 15 days for the 27th time during his imprisonment.
