Abkhazian Telegram channel broke the news of the murder. Abkhazia-Center wrote that after a verbal altercation, three armed men beat local resident Temur Karbaia: “He was severely beaten. The victim was so badly hurt that he had to be hospitalized in Sukhumi, where he died without regaining consciousness. Karbaia had problems with the law on both sides of the Enguri River, and he was in the sights of Abkhazian and Georgian law enforcement officers”.
According to the State Security Service of Georgia, the representatives of the occupation regime confirmed the death of the Georgian national but denied the attempt to illegally arrest Temur Karbaia. “Since the incident happened deep in the occupied territory, in the city of Gali, the process of researching additional information is underway,” said the SSSG.
President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili addressed the incident. According to her, the brutal treatment of the local militia in occupied Abkhazia cost the life of another citizen of Georgia.
“This tragic event is another reminder of the blatant violation of human rights in the territories occupied by Russia. It is a pity that such events are happening even on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” Zourabichvili says.
According to the assessment of the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, the responsibility for the alleged violation of the right to life of a Georgian citizen lies with the Russian Federation, because it exercises effective control over the occupied territory.
“It is unfortunate that the occupation regime still leaves unpunished the persons responsible for the murder of four Georgian citizens - Davit Basharuli, Giga Otkhozoria, Archil Tatunashvili, and Irakli Kvaratskhelia. Also, the case of the murder of a Georgian citizen a month ago in the occupied territory near the village of Kirbali is still uninvestigated. In light of the above, the involvement of international organizations and the international community as a whole is particularly important for the prevention of violations of the right to life, because the impunity of such actions puts the lives of Georgian citizens in heightened danger,” said the Public Defender.
According to the 2022 report of the State Security Service, 13 Georgian citizens were arrested in occupied Abkhazia in 2022.
Three citizens of Georgia are currently in illegal detention in occupied Abkhazia.
29-year-old Irakli Bebua has been imprisoned for the third year. His health condition is serious. On September 30, 2020, Bebua was arrested in the Gali region for burning the Abkhazian flag. He was convicted under three articles of the so-called Criminal Code, including desecration of the state flag, and was sentenced to 9 years in prison in December 2020.
In May 2023, 25-year-old Kristine Takalandze was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison. The prosecutor's office charged her with “espionage in favor of the Georgian special forces”.
In November 2022, in Sukhumi, employees of the so-called Security Service arrested 29-year-old Asmat Tavadze, a citizen of Georgia, a resident of Gali. He is accused of purchasing and storing narcotic substances.
