"We have a simple question: if we had made mistakes, why did the public register registered us and allow us to function as a party for almost three years? If they came and fined us as a party, why did they do that if we were not recognized as a party? And how did it happen that we went through the election registration process with the Central Election Commission, where they were supposed to assign us a number and the chairman of the CEC was to sign, only to have our party canceled?" Stated Zurab Makharadze, one of the leaders of Alt-Info.
Giorgi Kardava, former chairman of Conservative Movement/Alt-Info, asserts that the party's cancellation is illegal, stating that the reason behind this decision is "out of the question."
"This is unspeakable illegality. Injustice of a magnitude not even witnessed during Saakashvili's tenure. Not even Saakashvili dared to engage in such methods against political opponents. Bidzina Ivanishvili has lost all sense of propriety and seems to believe that this country is his personal property, where he can mold the constitution and laws to serve his political interests," stated Kardava
The leaders of Alt-Info are urging their supporters to protest and take action.
"Regardless of the party's nature or ideology, if it's registered according to Georgia's legislation, there must be specific grounds for its cancellation, as outlined in the law. The Office of the Public Defender will investigate this matter, and we will share our opinion with the public on the correctness of the decision made by the Public Registry," stated Public Defender Levan Yoseliani.
On April 3 of this year, the Georgian Anti-Corruption Bureau requested to verify the legality of the registration of Conservative Movement/Alt-Info. The National Public Registry Agency determined that on December 6, 2021, the founding documentation submitted by the party leadership for the purpose of registration did not meet the requirements established by law. In particular, the charter was not approved by the Congress. The decision of the public registry entered into force on April 8. Alt-Info has 30 days to appeal it.
The Conservative Movement/Alt-Info was planning to participate in the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 26. For this purpose, at the end of March, signatures of more than 50,000 supporters were submitted to the Central Election Commission. The CEC deemed 25 119 signatures to be valid, which is sufficient for the party's registration as an electoral entity.
Shortly after its establishment, the Alt-Info party was fined 217 482 GEL for concealing a non-monetary donation.
