“We do not leave our friends in need. At my request, a group of Polish doctors of the emergency humanitarian and medical aid brigade started a complex medical examination of President Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia,” wrote Mateusz Morawiecki on Twitter.
A group of five doctors is already in Tbilisi and visited Vivamedi, a contractor clinic of the Special Penitentiary Service, on July 12. The group members have not made a comment to the journalists.
Mikheil Saakashvili and his lawyers claimed for months that the Georgian authorities did not allow Polish doctors to enter Vivamedi. At the press conference held on July 4, the Minister of Justice, Rati Bregadze once again stated that this accusation is baseless. According to Bregadze, the Ministry offered Mikheil Saakashvili the inclusion of the desired doctors in the treatment process in November of last year, however, his family addressed the Ministry with an official letter only 4 months later and the application was submitted incompletely.
“When a person is sick and seeks immediate medical attention, he and his relatives should not be sending an incomplete application 4 months later, when he knows full well that the doctors will not be able to come in that way. They just want to stir controversy and for this man’s name to constantly be in focus and relevant,” stated Bregadze.
Mikheil Saakashvili appeared at his July 3 trial for the first time since February. He participated in the Tbilisi City Court session on the so-called November 7 case remotely from the Vivamedi clinic. From the footage, it can be seen that his health condition is serious. On the same day, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that Russia is killing the Ukrainian citizen at the hands of the Georgian authorities. He requested the handover of Saakashvili to Ukraine and gave the order to send the ambassador of Georgia to Tbilisi to hold consultations on this issue.
