“The investigation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs established that in the summer of 2023, the defendant illegally deprived the freedom of a 14-year-old minor intending to force her into marriage and brought her to the village of Lambalo in Sagarejo district, where the victim was restricted from free movement. Despite this, the minor managed to escape, but her family members brought her back.
Taking advantage of the victim's helplessness, the defendant had been raping the minor who was in an unregistered marriage with him.
On October 6, the defendant, believing that the victim disrespected him by escaping and as a woman, did not have the right to dispose of her private life and refuse to marry him, inflicted several gunshot wounds on the 14-year-old. As a result of the injuries, the victim died on the spot,” stated the prosecutor’s office.
26-year-old Ali Sadigov is charged under Article 4 of the Criminal Code - premeditated murder committed against a minor family member based on gender; illegal deprivation of liberty of a minor; rape, committed using the helplessness of the victim and against a minor; and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. He faces 16 to 20 years or life imprisonment.
The prosecutor's office forwarded the criminal case to the Telavi district court for substantive consideration.
5 persons, including the girl's mother and uncle, have been arrested in connection with the murder. The prosecutor's office accuses them of forcing the victim girl into marriage and not reporting the crime. Before the arrest, the mother said that she was afraid of Alim Sadigov because he threatened her with murder should the girl be taken away. According to the investigation materials, though, the mother liked Sadigov as a son-in-law because he was well off.
The prosecutor's office also accuses the victim's uncle and cousin of failing to report a serious crime.
14-year-old Aitaj Shakhmarova was an 8th-grade student in Karabulakh public school. She has not reported to school since the new academic year, which the principal failed to report to the police or the social service. The school principal has not been arrested.
