Bakur Avsanjarishvili, the Mayor of Kazbegi, mentioned that the climbers may have died during a deterioration in the weather.
“On the glacier, during the ascent to the summit, another climber found one body and then, following the rope, discovered the other. The weather worsened over two days, and it seems they died during that time. Two days ago, they were brought down by helicopter. At that time, it was not known which country's citizens were deceased. Most likely, they climbed the peak from the Russian side, as no one had climbed from our side at that time,” the mayor of Kazbegi told Georgian News.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has initiated an investigation into the incident under Article 116 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to negligent homicide.
The height of the Mkinvartsveri is 5054 meters above sea level, and it takes an average of seven hours to climb to the summit. At 3656 meters, there is a meteorological station, known as the Bethlemi Hut, which is also used by mountaineers as a base camp. It takes several days to climb to the top from the Russian side.
