The bill envisages the allocation of almost $61 billion for Ukraine. According to CCN TV, about $23 billion of this amount is intended to replenish the stock of American weapons, $11 billion to finance US operations in the region, and about $14 billion to purchase modern weapons and defense systems for Ukraine. In addition, the bill includes $26 billion in aid to Israel and Taiwan.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, thanked the members of Congress and the Speaker, Mike Johnson. He stated that this is very important help that will be felt by the soldiers on the front line and also by the Ukrainian villages and towns that are suffering from "Russian terror". "We will use America's support for the just end of this war, a war that Putin must lose," Zelensky said.
The Russian government also responded to the decision of Congress. Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova said in an interview with CNN that the foreign aid package "will exacerbate the global crisis." According to Dmitry Polyansky, the first deputy of Russia's permanent representative to the UN, the new military aid cannot prevent "the end of the Kiev regime."
The lower house of Congress has not been able to approve the issue of allocating military aid to Ukraine since the fall of last year due to disagreements between Republicans and Democrats. On April 20, the bill received unanimous support from Democrats, while Republicans were split. On April 23, the document will be approved by the Senate, after which it will be signed by President Joe Biden.
According to the BBC, a week ago, the commander of the Ukrainian army, General Oleksandr Syrsky, said that the situation on the battlefield in the east of the country has "deteriorated significantly." General said that without new aid and sophisticated weapons, Ukraine will not be able to "seize the strategic initiative" from the numerically superior Russian forces. The BBC wrote that Ukrainian soldiers on the 1,200-kilometer front line have insufficient ammunition and have to save artillery shells.
At the end of March, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia is preparing for another major attack and intends to carry it out at the end of May or June.
