ambassador: In This Situation, No Way for Georgia to Secure Bundestag Approval for Membership

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

German Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, stated that approval from the German parliament (Bundestag) is required for Georgia to begin negotiations on joining the European Union. However, under the current circumstances, Georgia does not have the opportunity to do so.

Fischer noted that a similar conclusion was drawn by Anton Hofreiter, the chairman of the Bundestag’s EU Affairs Committee, following his visit to Tbilisi.

“MP A. Hofreiter, Chair EU Affairs Cmte. Bundestag in Tbilisi for 24 hrs. Conclusion:  Art. 23 of German Constitution & a specific law (for German lawyers: EUZBBG) requires approval of  Parliament b4 opening accession negots. As things stand now, NO WAY this will happen for Georgia,” Peter Fischer wrote on Platform X.

Anton Hofreiter was in Georgia as part of a visit to the Caucasus and met with the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili. As per information released by the presidential administration, during the meeting, Zourabichvili discussed the most serious and systematic violations identified during the elections and the pre-election period, which directly impacted the election results, violated the secrecy of the vote, hindered the free expression of the will of the voter, and undermined the universality of voting. The meeting also addressed the hybrid war waged by Russia in the country. Additionally, according to the administration, Zourabichvili emphasized that there is no alternative to the European path for the country and reiterated the unwavering aspiration of the Georgian people toward European integration.
