‘‘Whoever invented the idea (to close Rustaveli Avenue during election year 2024) and to prevent mass demonstrations to happen this is a typical SOVIET style of handling a problem,’’ writes MEP Viola von Cramon on the rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue from 2024.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said on November 15 that the rehabilitation works of Rustaveli Avenue will start in 2024 and will last for more than 2 years.
‘‘As the first stage, we are looking to rehabilitate the existing buildings with strengthening works. There are also cultural heritage sites that require special treatment and the involvement of relevant experts. The last stage will be the arrangement of the road infrastructure with its underground communications. Rustaveli is very difficult in this respect and there are frequent cases of land collapse. We all agree that it is very important to carry out these works,’’ Kaladze said at the government meeting. According to the City Hall, about 90 million GEL will be spent on the rehabilitation of Rustaveli Avenue.
Kakha Kaladze called the opinion of opposition members that the Tbilisi City Hall plans to rehabilitate Rustaveli in order to prevent the holding of rallies, shameful.
‘‘They are in a dire situation. They are well aware that their chances in the upcoming elections are next to none. Regarding the project, I don't know how the rehabilitation of the buildings on Rustaveli Avenue would prevent the holding of a rally. They are again trying to mislead the population as if we are planning to close the roads, which is absurd. The rehabilitation of the existing buildings does not require closing of roads, and when these works are completed, the last stage will be the rehabilitation of the avenue with underground communications. When we start rehabilitating the avenue, then, of course, we will have to temporarily close the street, said Kaladze.
Parliamentary elections in Georgia will be held on October 26, 2024. As per the Constitution of Georgia, deputies will be elected only by a proportional system. Mandates of members of the Parliament will be distributed to those political parties that received at least 5 percent of votes.
