The Russian occupation forces illegally detained Georgian citizen Lasha Khetereli in the occupied territory. The information on this was released by the State Security Service of Georgia. The illegal arrest took place near the village of Disevi.

Lasha Khetereli has been arrested by the occupation forces several times. 25-year-old Khetereli is a refugee from Liakhvi Valley with relatives in the occupied territory. He was last arrested on December 24, 2021. On April 6, 2022, the so-called Tskhinvali District Court found him guilty of “illegal crossing of the state border” and sentenced him to one year and four months in prison. Khetereli was released from Tskhinvali prison on February 28, 2023, after serving his prison term.
Lasha Khetereli was illegally arrested on June 30, 2020, as well, and spent almost a year in Tskhinvali prison before being released on June 16, 2021.
One of his arrests occurred in 2014 when Khetereli was a minor.
The authorities of the de facto Republic of South Ossetia have not yet released information on the latest arrest of Lasha Khetereli. The State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) states that all available mechanisms have been activated to release the citizen of Georgia as soon as possible.
“As soon as the information became available, the “hot line” operated by the EU monitoring mission was activated. International partners and co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions were immediately notified about the incident. ‘’Responsibility for all destructive acts committed on the occupied territories of Georgia, as well as along the occupational line, falls on the occupying force,” the SSSG said.

As stated in SSSG, the representatives of the central government once again demanded with special strictness the unconditional and immediate release of all persons in illegal detention.
