Participants of Parliament Rally Hit with Water Cannons

The Russian law of the Georgian Dream party threatens independent media and civil society organizations and hinders Georgia from joining the European Union.

Russian law establishes Putin's rules in Georgia, which has eliminated free speech in Russia.

When you are oppressed, there will be no one to cover your problem and stand by you.

Georgian News will resist the Russian intention of the Georgian Dream to the end!

The Internal Affairs Ministry is disrupting the protest against the Russian Law at the Parliament. Water cannons were used against the citizens, and tear gas was deployed. The Ministry is urging the demonstrators to disperse.

Prior to that, pepper spray was used against civilians, resulting in dozens of injuries, including journalists and politicians.

The special forces are attempting to clear the area around the parliament. The protesters, mostly youth, assert that they will not retreat. They are standing in front of the special forces.

Georgian Dream intends to adopt the Russian Law, against which citizens have been protesting in the streets for more than two weeks with non-stop demonstrations. The rally on April 30 started at 19:00, parallel to the second reading of the law. Citizens blocked Rustaveli Avenue, and some of them moved to the back entrances of the Parliament, where deputies who authored and supported the Russian Law were supposed to leave. Employees of the Department of Special Tasks and various units of Internal Affairs Ministry forced the participants of the rally to leave the area.

Before today's events, on April 29, Georgian Dream organized a so-called general meeting in front of the parliament in support of the Russian law. Party assets and public service employees from the regions were brought in for the event. The statement, full of anti-Western messages, was read by the honorary chairman of the ruling party, Bidzina Ivanishvili. Ivanishvili stated that Georgian Dream has the resources to pass the Russian Law.
